Transportation/Planning

Community and Neighborhood District Planning Community transportation issues and neighborhood urban design plans allow for the consideration of innovative solutions to improve parking, pedestrian safety, and vehicular circulation through the use of consistent and reasonable traffic control devices.

This Section reviews a variety of proposed developments ranging from simple driveway installations to major shopping and housing construction. Traffic impacts to the local road system which may effect vehicle and pedestrian flow are analyzed. Recommendations are made for improvements to the land use and to existing infrastructure such as roads, intersections, as well as modifications to traffic control such as traffic signals, crosswalks, and signage.

In coordination with the Engineering Division, street rehabilitation and major roadway projects are an effort to plan and design geometric improvements to our transportation network such as roadway widening, left turn lanes, and traffic island modifications.

City and Regional Transportation Planning

Major City transportation plans and projects include Fort Washington Way, the riverfront street network, the Colerain Corridor, and the Waldvogel Viaduct. Interrelationship between automobiles, buses, and passengers will be greatly enhanced by the future Intermodal Riverfront Transit Center, the Knowlton's Corner Transit/transfer Center, and the Government Square improvements.

Regional transportation issues relate to the I-71 Corridor improvements which includes light rail transit; the I-75 Major Investment Study which includes a fourth Millcreek railroad line and a replacement Brent Spence Bridge; and the Eastern Corridor Study which includes a relocated and widened S.R. 32 and Red Bank Road Expressway and local service bridges with connecting ramps for the I-471 Bridge.

Intercity rail that encompasses the Cincinnati area are the proposed Midwest Regional Rail Initiative, The Cleveland-Columbus-Cincinnati Rail Corridor, the Eastern Corridor Oasis Commuter Line, and a new Amtrak route. These rail proposals are primarily for new passenger service, but they will impact existing and future rail freight traffic.
